Puppies & Kittens
Puppies and kittens require special care, so call for your initial exam as soon as your new pet arrives. We want to be sure your little one is healthy and strong, growing properly, and that no congenital problems exist. This hands-on physical exam is quite extensive and includes examining the eyes, ears, mouth, and teeth for proper development, as well as checking the heart, internal organs, and musculoskeletal system.
At the first exam we will also:
- Initiate the appropriate vaccination schedule for your pet
- Conduct testing for parasites or other necessary diagnostics
- Determine what wellness care suits both you and your pet
- Discuss your plans to spay or neuter
If you are adopting a pet, a special congratulations to you! You are not only getting a wonderful companion animal, but you are being a good steward of the pet world by sharing your home with a furry friend. Special kudos go to those of you who are welcoming a new addition to your family through rescue groups or shelters. The abandoned animal population grows daily and adoption from a shelter or rescue organization could be saving a life.
The protocol for puppies and kittens applies for newly adopted pets as well. We recommend that you schedule an appointment for your new pet within the first few days of adoption. Make sure you are given all the medical records on a new pet, and bring copies to your first appointment. This may save your pet from unnecessary vaccinations or treatments and save you from added expense.
Special note to those adopting a new pet: Ballston Animal Hospital offers a "Free First Visit" to animals adopted through the Animal Welfare League of Arlington, through the Washington, DC, Animal Humane Society, and through the Washington, DC, Animal Shelter also operated by the Washington Humane Society. Simply call us in advance to arrange for your "Free First Visit," which is our way of honoring your decision to save an animalís life.
